Flip phones are...

After engaging in a heated discussion with Mark about Flip-phones versus their open faced counterparts we decided to take the arugment to our blogs. I believe he will attempt a rebuttal later today.

Flip phones are the splash pages of the wireless industry.

What a waste, having to open it first. Kinda makes that feature where you can see the persons picture pop up useless huh? They also tend to be fatter. What about that antenna that sticks out? Nokia's been doing internal antennas for yeeeears.

Hinges? One more thing to break. Personally I also find that slam shut noise annoying as well. But, but it protects my phone when I drop it. Then get a case or be more careful.

The one thing flip phone makers have done better than my beloved Nokia is apparently make better deals with the service providers because it sure as hell is easier to score a free flip phone.

I know its almost like starting up a pc/mac or mp3/mp4 debate, but I'm in the mood, so why do you agree or disagree? Don't take anything I say too seriously. After all, I am listening to t.A.T.u.'s Russian album as I write this.

My entry is up. Regarding that "man hangs picture in gallery" story from your lalalinks, Tom Green did the same thing six or seven years ago on his TV show. I have the episode if you ever want to watch it -- must take a lot of nerve.

Why not just get a PDA phone and you dont have to have this debate? I personally think those win overall.

Kel: because PDA phones are too fat to fit into my pocket. end of discussion.

I personally prefer the non-flip ones. I have a slider phone and it works great.

don't get me started on mp3 vs. mp4...man that would be OUT OF CONTROL.

Kel: PDA phones are a bad idea. If Windows can't run my computer reliably, why would I trust it with my phone calls?

Henry: I hadn't even thought of slider phones (not very common around here). I wonder if they deserve their own category?

GB83: That debate would eventually splinter into MP3 vs MP4(AAC vs all of the other so-called MP4 audio technologies).

Hmmm. Slider phones still have many weaknesses of the flip. Extra moving parts, not instantly accessible buttons etc. Tho they are pretty trick :)

GB83 just fears advancement of technology. She still uses midi files and eats with chop sticks.

Mark: Nope, they aren't too common anywhere. I don't think they make too many of them anyway. I have the Kyocera slider-phone for Verizon. It's pretty old. The only thing I like about is that you can pull it up and down and it makes a "wooshing" sound :).
Taylor: You're right, they're pretty weak, so I have to take extra care of it.

You guys call them "Brick" phones. I believe the proper term is block or candybar phones.

I only call them brick phones because my first was roughly the size/shape/weight of a brick. If there is a technical term at all, I am 100% positive it isn't candybar phone, though. :P

I call the phones that were out 10 years ago that you had that big box and the handset connected to it with a cord brick phones. candybar or block phones arent that big, as the name says.

100% eh? Actuually Mark you are wrong. I have seen them referred to as candy bar phones many a time.

ZDnet even calls them that:

I think thats another point for my team. Candybar phones sound much more delicious than flip phones.

I have to admit, that I myself have a flip phone. Taylor, you totally called me on it not too long ago how much flip phones suck, and well I totally see your side. However, I sorta refuse to get a case for my phone, and I'm really clumsy/always carrying a lot of crap/not paying attention and drop my phone on multiple occasions.. On the pavement, in the mud, down three flights of stairs.. And it's still working beautifully. I can't complain!!

Around here, we don't call anything "candybar", let alone phones: things like Mars and Aero are chocolate bars, so if anything, we'd call them chocolate bar phones. But then, you'd get a mental image of your phone melting in your pocket.

Anyway, two things of non-relevance: (1) Can you send me that Bright Eyes song soon? (2) Why do the play tourism commercials for where you live on TV? I'm so confused. It's a local channel and it says "Visit Nova Scotia". If someone is watching this channel, they either live here, or they already are visiting. Bah.

Brick-phones they certainly are. And I think I need to make a shirt than says "I owned a flip-phone before they were cool".

So Taylor, I will address your arguments one by one:

1. "What a waste, having to open it first"

I say, what a waste, having to search for some obscure green button in order to answer a call. All I have to do is blindly flip the phone open and I know the call is ready to go.

2. "They also tend to be fatter."

I think the Motorola V3 would beg to differ.

3. "What about that antenna that sticks out?"

My phone doesn't have one of those. (Motorola MPX200). Admittedly, my first flip-phone did (many moons ago), but even Nokia still had antenae back then.

4. "Hinges? One more thing to break."

Maybe. But at least my precious (and expensive) color screen is protected from a beating. I think the chances of breaking a hinge are smaller than cracking an external screen. (I have cracked the outside screen on every phone I have owned since 1994. Never had a hinge go yet).

5. "Then get a case or be more careful."

Are you kidding? They make Nokias even more ugly. My phone is damage-free and dodgy fake-leather-case-free.

So my hinge might break in 10 years. So what! By then we will all be using Global Wireless VoIP :P
