I use Konfabultor (OSX and Win). They have cool little widgets that you stick on your desktop that tell you weather, time, easy phonebook look ups etc...
I use Dashboard (OSX). They have prettier widgets that don't stick on your desktop, and are only activated when you press a button (or hot corner) and are generally a pain in the ass.
Now I use Amnesty (OSX) which lets me stick all the prettier widgets of Dashboard on my desktop just like Konfabulator, without activating anything.

Go to www.kde-look.org and search for "Superkaramba". :D Now that is good, much better than any other similar application,even on other operating systems (Superkaramba works only for Linux though).
