iPod Generation 6 (and beyond)

iPod v5 just came out. They have video, color screens, proclaimed longer battery life, and are damn tiny (the nano). They are the best selling music player. They still need to be improved. I can think of two things I want more than anything out of an iPod, which don't seem unreasonable.

1. Battery Life. More of it. Did you know the video iPods only last 2-3 hours while playing video? And that's the claimed amount. Every iPod owner knows that you take their numbers and reduce them by atleast 20-30 percent to get a realistic idea of battery life. I am forced to charge my Mini every other day (atleast). MORE. I want it to last a week. Hell, I would even be happy with it actually lasting the full claimed amount (12hours) with normal usage.

2. Headphones. iPods get smaller. Click wheels are a revolution in usability. What do I struggle with every single day? My headphones. They get tangled, torn, caught by my hand while walking, etc etc etc. When will Apple concentrate their creative genius on wireless earbuds. Yeah, you know, the ones that everybody has dreamt of at one point. Little buds with maybe two little tiny antennas. Or connected just by a string that hangs behind your neck.

I give it 2 years.

I agree with you about battery life, but I think that really is out of Apple's hands. Battery technology hasn't been evolving at the same rate as electronics and there doesn't seem to be any technolgy on the way to fix that. Sony PSP has the same problem.

Most tech. companies are talking about fuel cells, but doesn't that sound weird? To be lugging around a Ipod with liqued gas in it.

I hope something changes soon.

Two points I'm gonna talk about
1) what is up with people using BIG ASS TEXT for stuff that should be small, such as your post a comment area? I mean yeah, the titles should be large, but not the textboxes. IMHO.

2) I agree with both of your points. However, it'd suck ass if you lost those little earbuds. Plus, the batteries would be expensive I'm sure, or you'd have to charge them in a really weird charging aparatus. My solution? Pull the earbuds up your shirt, or behind your neck. Works for me.

Wake up on the wrong side of the bed? BIG ASS TEXT is a design choice, and I like it.

I don't lose things, so thats not really a concern to me. And yes I pull earbuds up my shirt, but taking them off and on are a pain. I would pay more money for longer battery life btw.

Or Apple could stop saturating the market. Last month it was the Nano, this month The iPod, next month multi-coloured iPods with interchangable faceplates. By the time you go out and buy one type of iPod, suddenly there is one finitely better than that a month later with yours suddenly being phased out and slashed in price.

Battery life is tough in the world of batteries. Next stop would be the liquid gas option, then it'll last a week at a time. Mmmmmm, liquid gas.

I friggin love the BIGASSTEXT on here. kinda refreshing if it's balanced right. and ipods with gas, sounds like an explosive idea. get it? expolsive, hahhhhhhhh I'm an idiot. But I def love the ear bud idea. As long as they dont look like hearing aids I suppose. I like the ones on the end of sunglasses.

Heh, sorry, I was in a bad mood. However, I understand it's a design choice, but I just don't get it. Makes no sense to me.

Yeah, I'd pay more money for more battery life as well.

The click wheel rocks, and I will not deny the awesomeness that is the Nano, but I chose a Creative Zen Neeon. Cheaper, battery life reported at 16 hours, 5GB, for a lot less than an iPod. It has it's flaws, but I can live with them.

What is it with earbuds? Sure, they're alright, but why not just get fold-up headphones?

I've always found that the iPod battery life estimates to be somewhat conservative (with new iPods). After a while, the battery does lose it's longevity, but not so much that I think it's irritating.

Buy new headphones. I've never used Apple's. I don't understand why people use Apple's. I think of the supplied headphones as something you use until you get better ones.

I think that the videos should be any kind not just mp4s.
I also think that the price should go down around $50

I also thing that because it plays videos it should have better protection for the screen

There is software for the iPods so that you can put any type of media on it, say from your DVD collection.

Also, I bought a new eVo3 case for my iPod and it comes with a nice plastic screen protector, not just a rubber film to blurr the view on the iPod.

I agree with the headphones, yet I think it'll be a while before technology gets there. Also, most people lose their cell phones, iPods, keys. How are they going to remember where their wireless headphones are?

Just a thought.

I picture wireless head buds having only the headphone jack part of the wire in the ipod, and just ending with a point, about a half inch long. And the two little buds could be powered by something like a camara battery, or a hearing aid battery. That would be the life.

ok first apple/ipod isn't going to change their headphones if your make their current ones wireless imagine how small they would be, also as some1 else said changing the battery on those would cost more than the damn things
second battery life need 2 be extended...totally agree with that
finally i think the next gen ipod will have everything camera,music,phone,pda...etc u kno how apple rolls

Hey, i wanted to tell you mac users out there that there is a thing called instant handbrake that allows you to rip dvds into ipod format and fill the screen. FREE. Quite cool. OK, down to buisness, just a thought, wouldnt web scrolling be cool? Bluetooth better be in the next design, and downloading directly to the ipod from itunes, thats a cool thought

There are a few problems with the ipod that cannot be fixed. Apple knows how much everyone wants an ipod. Somethings they will save for future ipods. Think about it. Apple releases an ipod that has bluetooth, actcess to itunes music store, 23 hour battery life, 95 gb at lowest, and $150.00. What would they do next?

1)Battery life isn't going to be easy or cheap for Apple to fix. Apple doesn't make batteries, they buy them. If someone else came up with one that was better it would probably cost more.

2) Price is terrible. In some cases with the ipod Apple has made it as cheap as possible without losing money. But the nano cost $103.00 to make the 2 gb and it's on sale for $199.00. Now if they sell it for $130.00 it's a good deal. But they don't.

3) Head phones have been getting old. Apple has tried to find ear phones that go with the sleek design of the ipod. Wireless may not be as far away as everyone thinks. Apple has always wanted to be first, and best. No one has wireless earbuds. They could very easliy be rechargable. Losing them would be just a little easier than losing them now. So it's not such a bad idea.

4) There is no ablity to play videos on the nano without linux. But at the same time it uses the same software as the video ipod. So what's up? There is no better example of Apple holding back than this. They had full power to make the nano play videos. But they wanted to make more money. When Linux came out for the ipod, Apple's worst fear had happened. Their perfect mp3 player was destroyed. If Linux fixed the bugs and adverticed, Apple would lose it's competitive edge.

So what's the good news? I have no doubt that Apple is working on the problem right now. As Linux and other software for ipods come out, Apple works even faster for a better ipod. So don't worry, the next few ipods probably won't hold back very much.

The ipods with Linux now have shown Apple that if the public is not pleased with what they get, they will make one better.

I know what the Ipod v6 are. The Ipod is an entire screen!!!!! It doesn't have the click wheel, it will use touch screen buttons and will have more battery life. I got this information from my Dad who works for the ASC from the CEO of Apple Australia when the ASC was having a conference with Apple.
