Movie Recommendations

Posted on 10.31.05. Tagged with , , All

I am a member of Blockbuster Online (which is slower and uglier than Netflix, but is $3 dollars cheaper *plus* 2 free instore coupons a month). Anyway, I am in need of movie recommendations.

To get an idea of my taste I will quote my About page:

The Dreamers, Elephant, The Terminal, Lost In Translation, Life Aquatic, King and Queen, American Pimp, Monty Python &The Holy Grail, The Girl Next Door, Closer, Alfie, The Butterfly Effect, I Heart Huckabees, Hero, 25th Hour, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the Kill Bill(s).

I would also add "Me and You and Everyone We Know" and "Kings and Queen". In general I like weird, different movies that aren't like everything else. I appreciate comedy, drama or action as long as it offers something. Something more than movies like Dodgeball. I'm also not a fan of war movies (though I do want to see "Turtles Can Fly"). I also like documentaries like "Step Into Liquid" and "Mayor of the Sunset Strip".

If you could be so kind as to recommend some movies you loved, it would make me a very happy movie renter :)

Maybe I should start a movie page like Kottke.

Waiting for Guffman. If you like that one, look into the other Christopher Guest mockumentaries, from Spinal Tap to A Mighty Wind.

Firefly, if Blockbuster carries it and you haven't seen it yet. Start with the first disc (three episodes, watch all of 'em) to get a sense of whether you'd like it.

...and a million other recommendations, from Memento to Barenaked in America. Let me know if you like these and I'll supply more.

If you like Hero, then you'll definitely like House of Flying Daggers. Crash, which came out on DVD recently, has an excellent plot, where many different lives are connected to one other (suspence, and it spells out a powerful message). Sean Penn movies are an excellent choice; if you haven't seen them already, try: 21 Grams, Mystic River, and The Interpretor.
A bunch of other random ones:
- Million Dollar Baby
- Life of David Gale
- Runaway Jury
- Identity

All have great plots, but I'm sure you've seen most/all of them.

Hm. The only movie I can think of right now is Millions, which is either out now or coming out very soon. I didn't get a chance to see it, but I wanted to.

Rushmore (Wes Anderson) and The King of Comedy (Robert De Niro) are a couple of pretty unique comedies that I loved, although I'm guessing that if you've seen Life Aquatic and enjoyed it, you are almost definitely a Wes Anderson fan and have seen Rushmore, as well as the excellent Royal Tenenbaums.

The one movie of Anderson's that not as many folks have seen that I own and greatly enjoy is Bottle Rocket, his first.

"The Power of One" is my favorite movie of all time.

I can only recommend The Godfather Trilogy. It’s based on books by Mario Puzo and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Cast include: Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Robert De Niro and Andy Garcia. To name a few :)

Another movie that I quite like is Scarface (Director’s Cut)? (Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer)

However unbeaten for quite a while now, here’s my favourite movie of the year: Oldboy, which was directed by Directed by Chan-wook Park (It’s a Korean Movie, which will truly blow your mind!)

Thanks guys!

@Adam: Yeah I've seen all of the wes anderson flicks. love em! I couldn't find King of Comedy on BB though.

@Matt: I'm a huge Al Pacino fan. Seen most of his stuff. If you haven't I'd recommend Dog Day Afternoon.

I enjoyed watching Shaun of the Dead last night. Some great "The Office" type British humor and gore make it quite entertaining.

I've added these to my online queue:
The Interpreter
Life of David Gale
Song Remains the Same
The Italian Job (Original)
Millions
Oldboy

RE: "Italian Job" (original)...maybe some of us have seen "Oceans 11" old and "Oceans 11" new. Sure the new one is all hi-tech, incorporating CGI and the latest effects, but the old one still holds its own. Well, IMHO the Old "IJ" was an original idea and well-executed given the stuff they had to work with. And it was an original idea...try to find that from Tinseltown these days.

if you don't like waiting for guffman, you should still watch spinal tap. if you like both, then watch best in show next. and cinema paradiso is awesome (and in italian). i agree with michael on maria full of grace. and the motorcycle diaries. and the constant gardener (not on video yet). and regarding city of god. yes.
