When I'm away from my home PC (like at work, or traveling) I come across torrent files I would like to download at home. Sometimes, I usually just bookmark them and wait until I get home. But no longer my friends. This is the wave of the future. Why not have them complete by the time you get home!
What You Get
The ability to IM your home screenname with password "http://blah.com/house.torrent" and start automatically downloading a torrent
What you need
- Running Windows. (I haven't found a suitable plugin for Adium to allow similar functionality)
- Trillian Pro (the Basic, free version, doesn't support plugins). If you are on Windows and don't use Trillian, you should go buy it anyway. It is the best chat client available for PC users.
- Trillian Pro Plugin: Trigger (Installed)
- A Bittorrent client. (I use the easy, simple and free BitTornado)
Setting It Up
- Open Trillian Preferences, Click on Plugins, and Click "Change" on the Trigger Plugin (screenshot)
- In the Trigger box, type in a password, select incoming_privateMessage and click Add. The password is what you will prefex all torrent commands with so not anyone can send you commands (makes it a bit more secure). (screenshot)
- Go back to Main Trillian Preferences, and click Advanced Prefrences, then Automation (screenshot)
- Click Add and fill in the box like the screenshot. Use the "Browse" button to navigate to your copy of Internet Explorer (or FF). Click "Set Event" and close all Trillian Preferences
- You also must have your browser set to automatically open torrent files. Either just download a file and uncheck the 'always confirm box' or reverse this
Making It Work
Now just instant message your home screen name (from any other screenname) with:
password "http://blah.com/house.torrent"
and you will have that torrent downloaded by the time you get home. Note: If it is a member only site where you have to login, you'll need to be logged in through your web browser at home for the torrent file to work.

Have you tried TorrentFlux? Just recently discovered it on source forge.net (ref: http://www.torrentflux.com/ ). Solved my problems right away! ;)
