Affection

Do you ever think about the people that create the world around us?

How about the typographer who designed the font that is used on my Powerbook's keyboard keys? Or the guy who chose what shade of blue for the stripes on a sheet of notebook paper? Or the executive who chose to only print the odd answers in the back of math books? Or the committee that agreed upon the recycle logo and the person who made the mold to imprint it into my clear plastic drink cup? Or the government employee who decided what company to purchase the street lights from? Or the designer who decided how wide the wales on my corduroy pants should be? Or the artist who drew the specs for what honey bears should look like?

How do you affect the world?

These are things I think about quite frequently, actually, but I realize a lot of people don't.

Every day we consume things that thousands of people have been involved in creating and every day we create things that, directly or indirecly, are consumed by thousands of people.

Lately, I've found myself thinking about how wonderful, and strange, it is that the world works as good as it does. After all, when you meet politicians whom you've seen on TV, you realize that they're not smarter or more ambitious than you are. Their jokes are just as corny and their breath stinks after eating garlic - just like yours. The same goes for executives, sport stars, entertainers, professors and gravediggers. They all, like us, slack off every now and then, and often their decisions are as arbitrary as ours - even if theirs are much more important.

Sorry for ranting, but yes, I do think about this. Great to see that someone else does too.
