Dreamhost

Are they a scam? I *really* don't get how they make money. My old server at 1and1.com had some billing issues, so I'm moving elsewhere. I have decided to go with Dreamhost.

I got 20GB of space, 1000GB of bandwidth, unlimited hosting of domains, and registration of a new domain name for the grand total of $22.40. We'll actually it was $119.40, but 10 seconds of googling led me to dreamhost-promo.code.com where they were kind enough to supply a coupon code for $97 off (which, sadly enough, expires in 40 minutes from now).

$22.40 for a years worth of hosting. Don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic. But... what's the catch?

yeah, I got dreamhost a short while back, used them promo codes. I'm a tad stumped too. though those codes do expire after your first year, I think.

The $97 off is their referral fee -- you can create promo codes to discount up to the entire amount of the referral fee. They're probably hoping you'll refer people.

But you should have used my code!

Servers are generally crowded, and the performance isn't fantastic, especially if you are into RoR or Django.

The catches are:

* Promo code discount only applies to the first year, and in your subsequent years with them you will still be paying full price (which is still very cheap). DreamHost counted on long term customers, and it is not uncommon for hosting companies to pay/sacrifice $80-$100 for each new sign ups.

* $97 is their maximum referral fee, and in this case whoever provided you the code just rebated everything back to you.

* Despite overselling, DreamHost still has the capacity to offer you what they have promised -- because most people only use a fraction of their allowrance. I have a L1 DreamHost account, but uses only around 1Gb space + 3Gb bandwidth each month. There are many who use even less.

* Server speed and network speed varies from "terrible" to "not bad". Well, not bad for $22 for the first year. It really depends on which server you are on, or who are you sharing the server with. If you are sharing with a few busy vBulletin or phpBB sites, or big video download sites that really chew up 1Tb a month -- then expect slower speed than your other friend who hosts on a different server that only has a handful of blogsites with 5 visitors a day... But then that's the problem of shared hosting, not DreamHost specific.

They're just a great hosting company. Been using them for 2 years... love their service and prices.

After a LOT of looking around for a few days in mid-March 2006 and comparing features, pricing, etc., I went with DreamHost. Another DreamHost customer gave me a great deal by allowing me to use his coupon.

Good luck to everyone in their web host search and I hope the info above helps! DreamHost has definitely been good for me although I'm a bit biased due to the excellent return on my investment!!! As of 7/6/06, I've made $398.30 on affiliate referrals, and I only signed up with DreamHost in mid-March 2006!

I use to be hosted with them, they terminated my account on the same plan you're prolly going with. why? because they said my site was under a "hacker attempt".
ok, heres what I had hosted there.
cursors.
thats it, no html pages, no php pages. just cursors so I could actually use up that bandwidth that was there. I got to use about 800GB of bandwidth that month, and they started sending me messages saying that i was under attack because I was getting to many hits per second. How is someone suppose to use that much bandwidth without getting hits? idk.

when I first went with them, I thought it would be good too. after the 90 days where up where I could get a refund I started getting emails from them saying I was using to much cpu usage and my account would be terminated if I didnt fix it. my site was fairly small then, rendering only a few php pages, and 1 news feed script at the time which ran off of mysql. Dreamhost is seriously not work hooking up with. they're just out to get the small guys on their servers, with no room to grow.

btw, their servers go down at least 2 times a month. just earlier today my friend thats still hosted with them told me the whole network was down for about 5 hours. Yes the price is good, but in the long run, its seriously not worth the hassle.
